Barbecue” Fires Back: Gang Leader Responds to U.S. Terrorist Designation

Port-au-Prince, June 3, 2025 – Jimmy Chérizier, the alleged gang leader and spokesperson for the armed coalition “Viv Ansanm,” has publicly rejected the U.S. government’s decision to designate his group as a terrorist organization. In a widely circulated video on social media, Chérizier denounced the move and defended the group’s actions as part of a local resistance effort.
“We are not committing any crimes on U.S. soil,” he said, suggesting that Viv Ansanm’s operations are rooted in what he described as a struggle for fundamental rights in Haiti. He drew a controversial comparison to the January 6, 2020, Capitol riot in the United States, implying that both actions stemmed from perceived political grievances.
Chérizier also addressed the recent visit to Haiti by Pan-African activist Kemi Seba, expressing alignment with Seba’s message of unity. “We take to heart the message of solidarity he brought with him,” Chérizier stated.
In an uncommon moment of reflection, he admitted to certain missteps by the group. “We made a mistake by targeting the underprivileged. We are working on a plan to revise our strategy,” he said.
His remarks come as international pressure mounts against armed groups in Haiti, amid a worsening security and humanitarian crisis.
